She was born in <strong>Alabama<\/strong>, grew up near <strong>Waxahatchee Creek<\/strong>. Skipped town and struck out on her own as <strong>Waxahatchee<\/strong>. That was over a decade ago. <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> says she never knew the road would lead her here, but after six critically acclaimed albums, she\u2019s never felt more confident in herself as an artist. While her sound has evolved from <strong>lo-fi folk to lush alt-tinged country<\/strong>, her voice has always remained the same. Honest and close, poetic with Southern lilting. Much like Carson McCullers\u2019s Mick Kelly, determined in her desires and convictions, ready to tell whoever will listen.<\/p><p>And after years of being <strong>sober and stable in Kansas City<\/strong>\u2013after years of sacrificing herself to her work and the road\u2013<strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> has arrived at her most potent songwriting yet. On her new album, <em>Tigers Blood<\/em>, <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> emerges as a powerhouse\u2013an ethnologist of the self\u2013forever dedicated to revisiting her wins and losses. But now she\u2019s arriving at revelations and she ain\u2019t holding them back.<\/p><p><strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> says that she wrote most of the songs on \u2018<em>Tigers Blood<\/em>\u2019 during a \u201chot hand spell,\u201d while on tour in 2022. And when it came time to record, <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> returned to her trusted <strong>producer Brad Cook,<\/strong> who brought her sound to a groundbreaking turning point on 2020\u2019s <em>Saint Cloud<\/em>.<\/p><p>They hunkered down at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas\u2013a border town known for cotton and pecans\u2013and searched for another turn, waited for a sign. Initially, <strong>MJ Lenderman<\/strong>, <strong>Southern indie-rock wunderkind<\/strong> (much like Crutchfield when she started out) came to play electric guitar and sing on \u201c<strong>Right Back To It<\/strong>\u201d. But as soon as they tracked it, Cook told Lenderman he had to stay for the rest of the album. And he did.<\/p><p>\u201c<strong>Right Back To It<\/strong>\u201d is \u2018<em>Tigers Blood<\/em>\u2019\u2019s lead single. A nod to country duets like Gram and Emmylou, winding over a steadfast banjo from <strong>Phil Cook<\/strong>. Together, <strong>Crutchfield and Lenderman<\/strong> harmonize on the chorus: \u201cI\u2019ve been yours for so long\/We come right back to it\/I let my mind run wild\/Don\u2019t know why I do it\/But you just settle in\/Like a song with no end.\u201d <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> says it\u2019s the first real love song she\u2019s ever written.<\/p><p>The song \u201c<strong>Bored<\/strong>\u201d opens with blase drum beats from <strong>Spencer Tweedy<\/strong> that crash under <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> as she throws her voice high: \u201cI can get along\/ My spine\u2019s a rotted two by four\/Barely hanging on\/My benevolence just hits the floor.\u201d <strong>Lenderman\u2019s<\/strong> scuzzy riffs and <strong>Nick Bockrath\u2019s<\/strong> climbing pedal steel add power to the album\u2019s most \u2018Southern Rock\u2019 a la <strong>Drive-By Truckers<\/strong> moment.<\/p><p>\u201c<strong>365<\/strong>\u201d is a story of recognition told from a hard-won place of self-acceptance\/forgiveness. <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> initially started writing it for <strong>Wynonna Judd<\/strong>, with whom she has written and performed in the past, until the lyrics started hitting closer and closer to home. The writer <strong>Annie Ernaux<\/strong> says, \u201cwriting is to fight forgetting.\u201d Like<strong> Lucinda Williams<\/strong>, <strong>Crutchfield\u2019s<\/strong> lyrics are memoir. Throughout \u2018<em>Tigers Blood<\/em>\u2019 <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> is addressing a \u201cyou,\u201d but the \u2018you\u2019 in \u201c365\u201d evokes raw closeness, vulnerability. \u201cYa ain\u2019t had much luck but grace is\/In the eye of the beholder\/And I had my own ideas but\/I carried you on my shoulders, anyways.\u201d<br \/><br \/>\u201c<strong>365<\/strong>\u201d is essentially \u2018<em>Tigers Blood<\/em>\u2019\u2019s aria about addiction, with little to no accompaniment to <strong>Crutchfield\u2019s<\/strong> voice. Her backing band is hushed, as if the spotlight\u2019s coming down on her, alone on the stage, giving her testimony. <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> slings her voice with arresting precision, reaching its highest harmony on the whole album. \u201cSo when you kill, I kill\/And when you ache, I ache\/And we both haunt this old lifeless town\/And when you fail, I fail\/ When you fly, I fly\/And it\u2019s a long way to come back down.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201c<strong>365<\/strong>\u201d circles back to the beginning of \u2018<em>Tigers Blood<\/em>,\u2019 where <strong>Crutchfield\u2019s<\/strong> words ring clear as a bell. Album opener \u201c<strong>3 Sisters<\/strong>\u201d starts with <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> singing over hymn-like piano chords: \u201cI pick you up inside a hopeless prayer\/I see you beholden to nothing\/I make a living crying it ain\u2019t fair\/And not budging.\u201d \u2018<em>Tigers Blood<\/em>\u2019 is <strong>Crutchfield<\/strong> at her most confident and resilient.
